Ãâ°tretatÃÂ is aÃÂ townÃÂ in theÃÂ Seine-MaritimeÃÂ departmentÃÂ inÃÂ NormandyÃÂ in north-westernÃÂ France. It is located on the coast of theÃÂ Pays de CauxÃÂ area. Ãâ°tretat is best known for itsÃÂ chalkÃÂ cliffs, including threeÃÂ natural archesÃÂ and a pointed formation calledÃÂ L`AiguilleÃÂ or the Needle, which rises 70m 230ft above the sea.ÃÂ The Etretat Chalk Complex, as it is known, consists of a complex stratigraphy ofÃÂ TuronianÃÂ andÃÂ ConiacianÃÂ chalks.ÃÂ Some of the cliffs are as high as 90m 300ft. Two of the three famous arches are visible from the town, the Porte d`Aval, and the Porte d`Amont. The Manneporte is the third and the biggest one, and cannot be seen from the town.
